How to Apply to the Online MSW Program

| Degree and Minimum GPA | Students must have obtained a bachelor’s degree and earned a cumulative college GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. |
| Official Transcripts | Submit official transcripts from each college or university you’ve attended. |
| Resume/CV | An updated resume/CV must be submitted. |
| Letters of Recommendation | The online MSW program requires three letters of recommendation. Recommendations must be submitted by persons outside of the applicant’s friends or family who have direct knowledge of the applicant’s character and abilities. One reference must be academic. In the event the applicant cannot supply an academic reference (because, for example, they graduated from their undergraduate program many years ago and do not have contact with previous instructors), the applicant should include a personal statement explaining why they do not have an academic reference. A professional reference should then be included instead. |
| Two Essays | Essay 1: Submit an essay that addresses how your personal qualities, life experience and professional and volunteer work have led you to the field of social work and prepared you to honor the UM MSW Mission Statement. Essay 2: Submit an essay that analyzes a contemporary social issue that you consider relevant to the field of social work. Please note: Each essay should be written in APA format, with proper citation of academic sources, and be 3-4 pages long, not counting title and reference pages.
